Do some of your teeth look a little longer than they used to? Your teeth are not growing. It is much more likely that your gums are shrinking back. This is a common problem that can be caused by numerous factors, including advanced gum disease, genetics, teeth grinding, and simply the passage of time. If your receding gums are causing you to suffer from dental sensitivity or adversely affecting your smile’s appearance, it would be wise to talk to your dentist. They may recommend that you undergo a gum recontouring procedure.

What Is Gum Recontouring?

The term “gum recontouring” usually refers to a minimally invasive surgery. It often involves the use of a soft tissue laser, which can gently trim the gums. This can help the gumline to take on a more even, more proportionate appearance. Gum recontouring is normally seen as a purely cosmetic procedure. However, it does have oral health applications. For example, it can be used to remove diseased gum tissue or to make room on a tooth for a dental crown.

In cases of mild gum recession that is affecting the space near just a few teeth, gum recontouring might be able to help. By altering the gumline on nearby teeth, you may be able to achieve a more attractive smile.

It may also be right for you if you have gum disease and your gums have drawn away from your teeth, creating a pocket between them. Once the damaged tissue is gone, your gums should be able to reattach. The laser will even kill bacteria along your gumline, leading to more efficient healing.

Recovering Lost Gum Tissue

Gum recontouring does not encourage lost gum tissue to grow back. In most cases, it results in permanent removal of a portion of the gums. Therefore, if your gum recession is moderate or severe, you might require a different treatment to regain your smile’s health and beauty.

A gum graft involves suturing additional tissue (usually from another part of your mouth) onto the gums. Over time, the new tissue bonds with the gums, effectively integrating with your gumline and permanently covering exposed tooth roots. In some cases, both gum recontouring and a gum graft are part of a dentist’s strategy to help a patient regain their oral health.

Getting Started with Your Treatment

If you have noticed some gum recession, it is best to consult with a dentist sooner rather than later. Prompt treatment can reduce the chance that you will require an extensive procedure. During your consultation, your dentist will strive to determine the cause of your gum recession and recommend your next steps. Hopefully, it will not be long before you once again have a healthy, even, and proportionate gumline!
