What Is Dental Bonding?

Dental bonding is also called direct bonding or cosmetic bonding. It involves the use of a tooth-colored resin (the same material we use for tooth-colored fillings) to hide imperfections in teeth. We typically recommend dental bonding for patients who want to change the appearance of just one or two teeth, rather than totally make over their smile.

Some of the issues that dental bonding is usually able to address include:

Most patients qualify for dental bonding. It is even a suitable option for young children.

How Does Dental Bonding Work?

The dental bonding process is quick and noninvasive. First, we carefully select the color for the resin; we use a shade guide to help us make sure the results of the treatment blend in perfectly with the surrounding teeth. Then, we slightly roughen up the surface of the tooth that will receive the bonding and apply a special conditioning liquid. Your dentist then places the resin on the tooth and molds it into the desired shape. A special curing light hardens it in a matter of seconds. Finally, your dentist makes any necessary adjustments to the shape of the bonding before you can go off and enjoy your new look.

From beginning to end, the bonding process usually takes less than an hour.  In most cases, no anesthesia is necessary, and there is no downtime afterward. Patients are even able to eat and drink normally immediately after their appointment.
