I Lost My Invisalign Aligner — Now What?

Shrugging man wearing confused expression

Invisalign treatment has many good features, such as its discreet appearance and effective nature. However, one aspect of it that might lead to issues is the fact that the aligners are removable — there is a chance you could lose track of one! What should you do if that happens to you? This blog post provides some practical guidance.

Make a Thorough Search

If you discover that your Invisalign aligner is missing, stay calm and begin a systematic search. Start by retracing your steps, recalling where you last removed your aligner. Check common areas such as tables, countertops, and your purse or backpack. Look in places where you may have wrapped the aligner in a napkin or tissue; they sometimes get mistaken for trash and end up in a garbage bin!

Examine your bathroom, bedroom, and any other room where you regularly handle your aligners. If you have pets or small children, consider whether your aligner could have been moved or played with.

If you find your aligner, clean it thoroughly before you start wearing it again.

Call Your Dentist for Guidance

If your search for your aligner proves to be fruitless, contact your dentist immediately. They will help you determine the best course of action based on your specific treatment plan and how long you have been wearing your current aligner.

They may advise you to wear your previous aligner if you still have it, as this can prevent your teeth from drifting too far out of place while you wait for a replacement.

Alternatively, your dentist might suggest moving forward with your next set of aligners if you are close to your scheduled change. Do not do this without your dentist’s permission; moving forward too early may be very uncomfortable. You might even find that the aligners do not fit at all because your teeth have not yet made sufficient progress.

Prevent Future Mishaps

To avoid losing your Invisalign aligners in the future, develop habits that keep them safe. Here are some tips that might help:

  • Always place your aligner in its designated case whenever you remove it, rather than wrapping it in napkins or leaving it on open surfaces.
  • Keep the case in a consistent spot, such as your purse, backpack, or a drawer at work or home. This reduces the likelihood of misplacing your aligner and makes it easier to locate when needed. Some people use AirTags or similar products to keep track of their Invisalign case.
  • Set reminders to check that you have your aligner and case before leaving any location. If you travel or commute, carry a spare case and keep your aligner with you at all times.

Losing an Invisalign aligner can be stressful, but following the steps outlined in this blog post can help you keep your treatment on track.
