My Tooth Feels Fine — Why Does It Need to Be Extracted?

Despite some unflattering media depictions, dentists are not eager to remove teeth. Indeed, they view extractions as a last resort. You may be puzzled, then, if your dentist recommends that you get one of your teeth taken out — especially if it feels just fine! What are some reasons for extracting a tooth that does not hurt? This blog post explains five.

The Tooth Has Lost Its Vitality

Even if your tooth appears normal and causes no pain, it may have lost its vitality. In other words, it may be dead, without any blood flow. The nerve inside it is no longer functioning, so it cannot send signals to your brain to let you know something is wrong. Non-vital teeth can lead to many complications, such as abscesses and bone loss, so it is often best to get them extracted.

Gum Disease Has Undermined the Stability of Your Teeth

Severe gum disease poses a significant threat to the structures that support teeth, including the surrounding bone. If your dentist finds that one or more teeth have become loose or unstable due to advanced gum disease, extraction could be warranted. Removing such teeth, even if they are relatively healthy, facilitates more effective treatment for gum disease and paves the way toward a healthier mouth.

Overcrowding Is Disrupting Your Smile

Sometimes, the issue is not decay or infection, but simply a lack of space. Overcrowded teeth can result in misalignment, making oral hygiene more challenging. Your dentist may recommend removing one or more teeth to allow for orthodontic care or other measures to improve your oral health.

An Infection Is Lurking Beneath the Surface

A tooth may harbor an infection even in the absence of any pain. If antibiotics or root canal therapy cannot resolve the problem, extraction often becomes necessary. Removing the infected tooth prevents the infection from spreading and can protect both your oral and overall health.

Preventive Extractions to Avoid Future Issues

In some cases, extractions are a preventive measure. For example, wisdom teeth may not cause issues at the beginning of their development, but as time progresses, they frequently cause complications. Removing them proactively may be the best course of action.

In some cases, pain-free teeth need to be removed! If your dentist makes this recommendation, you can be confident they have your best interests at heart.
