I Have Dental Restorations — Will Invisalign Work for Me?

Straight, well-aligned teeth are a sign of good oral health, so if your smile is a bit crooked, you may be considering your orthodontic treatment options. Invisalign is a popular choice due to its discreet appearance and convenient nature. But what if you already have some restorations on your teeth, such as crowns, bridges, or veneers? Will Invisalign still work for you? In all likelihood, yes!

Crowns

Crowns are restorations that completely cover and protect compromised teeth. Invisalign aligners are designed to fit closely over teeth, including those with crowns, without causing damage or disrupting their function. Often, crowned teeth move just as well as those without crowns. Invisalign can even be a better than traditional braces for people with crowns because regular brackets do not always adhere well to the restorations.

Bridges

Dental bridges fill gaps by connecting artificial teeth to adjacent natural teeth or implants. Because bridges link multiple teeth, those teeth are not able to move independently, so Invisalign may not be able to do much to shift them. That is all right. In most cases, Invisalign can still effectively move the teeth around a bridge, leading to better alignment overall.

Veneers

Veneers are thin shells of porcelain or composite resin bonded to the front surface of teeth to improve their appearance. Invisalign aligners are generally safe for teeth with veneers, as they apply gentle force and do not require brackets or wires that might damage delicate restorations. The aligners will be shaped to fit snugly over your veneers, helping to maintain their integrity while adjusting the alignment of your teeth.

However, keep in mind that you still might have to replace your veneers after your Invisalign treatment concludes. If you have not yet gotten veneers, it would be best to delay getting them until after your teeth are well-aligned.

Talk to Your Dentist to Learn More

If you have dental restorations and are considering Invisalign, your first step should be a thorough discussion with your dentist. They will review your dental history, examine your restorations, and determine if Invisalign is appropriate for your unique situation. Hopefully, it will not be long before you are well on your way to reaching your goals for your smile!
