Is It Time to Replace Your Dentures? 5 Signs to Look For

Traditional dentures are a reliable form of tooth replacement, but they do not last forever. On average, they last 5 – 8 years or so. Is it time to swap out your old prosthetic for a new one? Your dentist can help you make that decision. In the meantime, here are five signs that indicate it may be necessary to replace your dentures:

Your Dentures No Longer Fit Well

Over time, the shape of your mouth and jawbone can change, which may cause your dentures to become loose or ill-fitting. If you notice that your dentures slip when you speak or eat, or if you need to use more adhesive than before, your dentist might be able to renew their fit by relining them (adding material to their base so they become snugger). However, there is also a chance that they should be replaced altogether.

Your Dentures Have Visible Signs of Damage

Cracks, chips, or broken teeth are not only unsightly but can also compromise the function of your dentures. Even small fractures can worsen over time, leading to discomfort or even injury to your gums and oral tissues. Some types of denture damage can be repaired in your dentist’s office or a laboratory. If the damage is severe, though, you might need to get a new set of teeth.

Your Dentures Are Discolored or Have a Strong Odor

Stains and persistent odors can develop on dentures despite regular cleaning, especially after years of use. If your dentures look yellow or emit an unpleasant smell that will not go away, it may be time to invest in a new set for both aesthetics and hygiene.

Your Dentures Are Uncomfortable

Dentures should feel natural and comfortable in your mouth. If you begin to experience sore spots, pressure areas, or mouth irritation, your dentures may no longer be providing proper support and should be evaluated by your dentist. If they cannot be modified to function better, it may be time for new dentures.

You Want to Upgrade to Implant Dentures

Perhaps there is nothing really wrong with your current dentures. However, if you are seeking greater stability and a more natural feel, you might consider upgrading to implant dentures. These are anchored in the jawbone and can provide improved chewing function, enhanced appearance, and increased confidence compared to traditional dentures. Plus, they have the potential to last for decades.

Do you think it might be time to replace your dentures? Talk to your dentist to learn more about your options for getting back to a comfortable, functional, and well-fitting smile.
