They are durable, natural-looking, and tough enough to stand the test of time. However, they are not invulnerable to problems. Rarely, one of them might fall off! What should you do if that ever happens to you? Do not panic. Instead, follow the practical steps outlined in this blog post.

Gather the Pieces

Try to locate the pieces of your veneer right away. Handle it carefully by the edges, and do not scrub it or attempt to clean it with harsh products. If it appears to be in one piece, place it in a small container or plastic bag so you can bring it to your appointment. Even if the veneer looks damaged, save any pieces you can find. Your dentist may need to examine them to determine why the veneer came loose and whether it can be repaired or replaced.

Call Your Dentist

Once the veneer is safe, contact your dental team. A fallen veneer is not the most urgent emergency, but it should be treated promptly. The exposed tooth may be more sensitive, and delaying care could increase the risk of irritation, decay, or further damage. When you call, explain when the veneer came off, whether you have pain, and whether the veneer is intact. This information helps your dentist prepare for your visit.

Protect Your Exposed Tooth

Until your appointment, avoid chewing on the side with the missing veneer. Stay away from hard, sticky, crunchy, very hot, or very cold foods that could aggravate the tooth or cause discomfort. Instead, eat a mild and soft diet. Brush gently around the area and rinse with water to keep it clean. If the tooth feels sharp against your tongue or cheek, you may cover the edge with dental wax from a pharmacy. Do not use super glue, household adhesive, or any non-dental product to put the veneer back on.

Receive Treatment

At your appointment, your dentist will examine your tooth, the veneer, and your bite. If the veneer is intact and the tooth is healthy, it may be possible to clean and re-bond it. If the veneer is cracked, warped, or no longer fits correctly, you may need a new one. If decay, damage, or bite pressure contributed to the problem, your dentist will need to address that issue before focusing on the aesthetic aspects of your smile.

Reduce the Risk of Future Incidents

After your veneer is repaired or replaced, you should protect your investment with smart daily habits. Avoid biting your nails, chewing on ice, opening packages with your teeth, or using your veneers to bite into very hard foods. If you grind or clench your teeth at night, ask whether a custom nightguard would be helpful. Keep up with excellent oral hygiene and regular checkups so your dentist can monitor your veneers, your gum health, and your bite.

Veneers are durable, but they do not last forever. If one of yours falls off, follow the practical steps in this blog post to get your smile’s health and beauty back on track.

Meet the Practice

At Comprehensive Dental Associates of Central Connecticut, we are proud to provide high-quality care for our patients, including cosmetic services like veneers.
